1. Project Title & Overview

Transforming a Legacy Single-Page Site into a High-Performance Digital Showroom

Verhoef Custom Woodworking, Inc. is a premier, full-service custom cabinetry and architectural woodworking manufacturer located in Hull, Iowa. Operating out of a physical showroom at 1122 Main Street, they specialize in high-end residential installations—ranging from luxury kitchens and hidden pantry entrance doors to bespoke finishing and custom media centers—alongside their elite status as an official Cambria Premier Partner.

This case study details an exploratory redesign aimed at resolving critical performance bottlenecks, elevating brand presentation, and introducing an e-commerce revenue stream for pre-made woodworking products.

2. The Challenge & Context

While Verhoef delivers top-tier physical craftsmanship, an audit of their legacy digital presence revealed key technical and usability bottlenecks that created friction for prospective clients:

  • Monolithic Single-Page Bottleneck: The original site loaded all content—Home, About, Gallery, and Contact details—on a single scrolling page. Browsers were forced to download every high-resolution project photo at once, leading to slow load speeds, particularly on mobile devices.
  • Hidden High-Value Work: Exceptional architectural features—such as hidden pantry entrance doors, custom finishing capabilities, and textured melamine pantries—were buried in static text blocks rather than highlighted visually.
  • Friction in Lead Capture: The legacy contact section relied on raw phone numbers and static email addresses rather than a structured form. This forced potential clients to switch apps to send an inquiry, causing a drop-off in potential consultation bookings.
  • Unrealized Retail Opportunities: The original web structure offered no e-commerce functionality to showcase or monetize pre-made inventory (such as handcrafted cutting boards, mantle pieces, or custom floating shelves).

3. Design Strategy & UX Solutions

The primary strategic objective was to build a modern multi-page web architecture that mirrors the tactile luxury of visiting their physical showroom in Hull.

  • Palette & Visual Tone: Established a sophisticated visual hierarchy using deep forest olive (#1c2826), warm wood tones (#8c6d46), and warm canvas backgrounds (#fcfbfa). Serif display typography lends an artisan feel, balanced by clean sans-serif body copy for legibility.
  • Multi-Page Restructuring: Separated content across dedicated, fast-loading pages: Home, About, Gallery, Shop, and Contact. Implemented image lazy-loading to ensure instant initial response times.
  • Pre-Qualifying Consultation Form: Replaced static text contact info with a structured consultation request form that lets potential clients specify project type, surface preferences (such as Cambria Quartz or Onyx), and layout dimensions.
  • Integrated E-Commerce Engine: Designed a lightweight Shop & Cart experience using client-side state management, enabling direct retail sales of smaller woodwork decor alongside high-ticket custom cabinetry requests.

4. Key Highlights & UI Improvements

  • Fast-Loading Architecture: Segmented page routes eliminate asset congestion and provide responsive mobile navigation.
  • Feature Spotlights: Dedicated visual cards and filtering options for high-value services like hidden pantry doors and custom finishing.
  • E-Commerce Shop & Cart: Modular product cards, interactive cart drawer, and seamless checkout UI for pre-made pieces.
  • Dedicated Showroom Hub: Highlighted local details for the 1122 Main Street Hull showroom, guiding prospective clients on how to prepare for design appointments.
  • Vendor Integration: Elegant visual callouts for official partners like Cambria Quartz, Onyx Systems, Amerock, and Blanco Sinks.

5. Project Takeaways

  • Technical Problem Solving: Demonstrates how auditing asset loading patterns and navigation hierarchy directly resolves conversion friction.
  • Strategic Brand Alignment: Illustrates how online interface design can be aligned with physical high-end craftsmanship to project authority and quality.
  • Modern Web Execution: Highlights full-stack skills using React, Tailwind CSS, and Vite to construct performant, business-focused web applications from concept to deployment.
